Yeah, Clive Bunker & Michael Giles!! [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img]
I had fun learning their parts too. Bizarre phrasing you said about Giles...so true!
I played in a prog band (86-91) that was doing compositions and old covers from known and less known bands. I remember that we played:
?Aqualung? & ?Locomotive breath? of J.Tull (Clive on kit)
?In the court of the Crimson king? & ?21st cent. Schizoid man? of King Crimson (Giles on kit)
?Roundabout?, ?Heart of the sunrise? & ?Long distance?? of Yes (classic Bruford)
?Firth of 5th? of Genesis (tasty Phil)
?Free hand? of Gentle Giant (pioneers of odd times)
?Hocus Pocus? of Focus (crazy Dutch band; Pierre VanDer Linden just smoked on drums)
?School of instant pain? of Triumvirat (killer German band ?? la ELP?)
?Celebration (Fiesta)? of Premiata Forneria Marconi (insane Italian band)
All had weird and intense drumming. Was LOTS of fun!! European prog has ALWAYS ruled!!
Surprisingly, this music is still very much appreciated. We always had lots of people at our shows and they knew all the tunes.
I have a KC official bootleg from the late 60's with Giles playing a big double bass kit. Unfortunately I lent the better CD to a friend who moved to San Fran. They did a cover of Holst's Mars, I think it's in five. I was going through my cd's last night and found it.
Giles just kills it. Really odd fills and beats but they do fit and are clean and strong.
We used to listen to Giles and try to figure out if he was just screwing up or not. It was perplexing. [img]smile.gif[/img]
The first time I heard 21st Century I was blown away by his playing.
Still is.
Giles was also one of my favorites, way back when!
I'll try and upload another one.

It seems that EVERY fill Giles played was just ODD... [img]biggrin.gif[/img]
I pulled out that old KC bootleg and on Court of the Krimson King, he takes those already wierd fills and throws them into a washing machine full of madness and makes them ever WIERDER.
But they do fit, he does pull out of the dive. Cool double bass flourishes too...

Guitar virtuoso Gary Hoey did an instrumental version of Hocus Pocus in the early 90's which had some success. But the original version is 1000X much better. With all those cool drum breaks followed by helvetian voicings... CRAZY!!
Now, if I could just setup that f*%$! VPN, I'd upload that tune for you...

I still say Bruford kicked both Phil & Chester's tail on his rendition of Cinemashow/Dance on a Volcano [now, notice i didn't say that he kicked Chester's tail as a drummer, period, himself; just on that tune ;c) ...& Phil proved himself on a lot of Brand X & the more "prog" Genesis stuff, AWA being 1 of the kings of 80's pop]

Lullabye - that's the tune i always talk about w those cool BB fills, starting at approx 1:38 or so...i had the orig version on cassette [img]graemlins/gulp.gif[/img] , i believe it's off Heavy Horses? The 1st 2 fills on that live mp3 starting at 1:38 are just slightly diff than the orig, but the 2nd 2 sound pretty much the same...gotta love that "schooling peart" hi-to-lo tom, over-the-bar-line fill at 1:51...& a slight bit of "the Vinnieness" seeping [or is it "bursting"] out in the 4th fill during that triplet feel 3/4 segment ;c) [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img]
